Lilia Podkopayeva is known to be one the best all-arounder in gymnastics history. Though her floor routines rank high as fan favorites.[su_row] [su_column size=”1/3″]
[/su_column] [su_column size=”1/3″] At the beginning of 1996, Lilia Podkopayeva was seriously injured when she fell from the beam in practice, fracturing two ribs.
She went on to crush the competition at the 1996 European Championships. Leading Ukraine to third place, won the all-around, place 3rd on beam, 1st on bars & floor.
In Atlanta for the 1996 Olympics the Ukrainian team’s placed fifth. Lilia Podkopayeva then went on to win the all around final with a score of 39.255.
“I did feel some responsibility as the champion of the world and champion of Europe to perform well. I’m very happy I could finish with the floor.”
Lilia Podkopayeva originally intended to continue competing after the 1996 Olympics. However, injuries forced her to sit out the competition and to later retire.
